One of House of Hope CDC’s newest programs, Honoring Youth Power and Experience (HYPE). HYPE is an outreach program at the House of Hope CDC for 13-24 year-olds in Rhode Island who do not have stable housing and are not in the physical custody of a guardian.

We understand that people experience homelessness because of the decisions of people who control power and resources. HYPE aligns with youth to build community well-being and advocate for social justice.

HYPE outreach workers meet youth in-person or virtually wherever they feel comfortable. We offer immediate basic needs supplies and short-term resource navigation support. For supplies, we offer snacks, toiletries, backpacks, warm clothes, sleeping bags, safer sex supplies, and harm reduction supplies, and bus passes. For support, outreach workers listen to youth’s goals, explain what resources exist, and break down barriers to housing resources and community support. In addition, HYPE intentionally builds meaningful relationships among social service agencies and grassroots organizers, and community members to build more awareness and dedication to achieving housing justice.

HYPE aims to increase youth’s access to safe housing and a supportive community, thereby reducing the occurrence and impact of victimization and make Rhode Island a place where youth homelessness does not exist.

HYPE provides low-barrier case management services by connecting with youth where they feel comfortable, whether that is on the street, in the community, or over the phone. HYPE case managers support youth with:

  • getting on waiting lists for emergency and long-term housing
  • basic needs supplies, harm reduction supplies, and bus passes
  • getting vital documents
  • applying for government benefits
  • connecting with community resources

o Job training
o Re-entry resources for people who were formerly incarcerated o GED-prep and college application process
o Youth social supports
o Physical/mental healthcare including substance use resources o Domestic violence and street violence resources

To connect with HYPE to get support (for you or someone else) or offer support (by partnering or donating), please contact the HYPE Program Manager, Tory Kern, by texting or calling 401-400-2188 or emailing Tory@thehouseofhopecdc.org.
