After one of Rhode Island’s largest temporary shelters closed, we created Operation First Step to help get Rhode Islanders back on their feet.
Collaborating with the state and our long-time partners, we aim to develop a smarter system that focuses on the needs of the community and short-term housing. We provide the highest level of case management, support, with dignity not found in any other shelter.
Currently, we cater to both men and women in need. Our women’s First Step program provides transitional housing for 5 homeless women. Our men’s First Step program currently provides transitional housing for 12 homeless men.
Fact: 325 unsheltered individuals are living on the streets, in cars, in encampments, or other spaces not meant for human habitation.
Fact: 146 shelter beds have been removed from the emergency shelter system due to physical distancing requirements while the demand for individual emergency shelter has quadrupled.
Fact: Our ECHO Village project will provide 100 individuals with a safer, more dignified alternative to emergency shelter, along with a variety of services to achieve permanent housing.
